Submissions Deadline for TNCP #35
Just a quick, but important reminder that our Editor, Martin Oakes, has chosen September 16, 2011 as the deadline for submissions to The New CartoPhilatelist.
The date for publication will be in early October 2011. Those of you interested in submitting an article should contact our Editor, Martin Oakes prior to submission. Martin has said that material and articles for Issue #35 are required and mentioned, "The hardest part about being an editor is having enough good articles of varying length to fill the pages. Please write about your favorite map stamps and tell us why they are important to you."
Issue #34 contained a translated article that was first published in French, in another philatelic journal. As the Society is international in scope, we have various members that can sometimes volunteer translation resources. For those of you that have non-english articles and would like to see them translated and published in The New CartoPhilatelist please contact our Editor Martin Oakes.

Changes to the Current CartoPhilatelic Society Officers
At the end of July Dr. Alf Jordan has steped down from his post as Secretary/ Treasurer. Alf was instrumental in rejuvenating the Society after a multi-year hiatus, and his guidance has helped restore the Society to its present active condition. Alf will be focusing on some cartographic research in the near term. We will all miss our regular communications with Alf but we are sure that we will hear from him again soon, hopefully in a forthcoming issue of The New CartoPhilatelist!
David has more about Alf's outstanding contribution to getting the Society back on its feet in the Society News section of the October 2010 #31 issue of The New CartoPhilatelist.
Our "Representative at Large" Mr. Ed Vallery, has agreed to help take over the duties of Treasurer and Society President David Wolfersberger will be filling in to support the Secretarial duties for the present time.

Closed Album: Lillian Kent

Lillian Kent
|
I was saddened to learn that Lillian Kent, long time Society member and Secretary/Treasurer Emeritus had passed away on June 18, 2009 at the age of 91. Ms.
Kent
was born in
Johnstown
,
Pennsylvania
in 1917. Lillian was active in the Society for many years, and I am sure that many of our veteran members will remember her activities and contributions to the CartoPhilatelists.
“I remember Lillian -- she was a geography teacher in
Lowell
,
MA
at that time. She had a special interest in polar maps,” wrote Society Treasurer Ed Vallery, “she sent me my first map stamps, and from then on, I was hooked on cartophilately.”
President Emeritus Miklos Pinther wrote, “Lillian and I became officers (treasurer & president) about the same time, in the beginning of 1986. Unfortunately, we never had a chance to meet personally, but of course, we corresponded and spoke on the phone frequently, dealing with Society matters. I knew she was a geographer who had assumed a bookkeeping job with a travel agency after her retirement. She did an excellent job as a treasurer and wrote several very fine articles for our journal. She impressed me as a modest person who meticulously carried out her tasks, someone who always showed great civility. I remember that Lillian was quite unhappy when the Society had to suspend its operations. I am sure she felt very gratified that she was an important connection to resurrecting our activities.”
As Miklos mentioned, Lillian carried on after the Society became dormant in 1995. She continued to compile new issues checklists which she graciously shared with me when I first began to update the Maps on Stamps Checklist. The updating work Lillian had done on the new issues saved much time, and eliminated the need to go back and cover those several years while the Society was inactive. She also maintained the funds remaining in the account, so we were able to have some “money in the bank” when the Society was restarted.
Our thanks go out to Ms.
Kent
for all of her contributions over the years to the CartoPhilatelic Society, and our sympathy to her son, Michael.
David Wolfersberger
November 2010
President
The CartoPhilatelic Society
[ During Ms. Kent's association with the Society, she wrote a number of articles for the Carto-Philatelist Journal. The Society is working to make these available in the forth coming TNCP Journal and on the web site. Please check back in the coming month for more information. --web admin ]

Egypt sc271 Imperf Sheet circa 1953 auction catalog photo
|
The March 2010 issue of the APS Web Newsletter, the Expertizing item of the Month discusses an imperf pair of Egypt sc271, that a collector was interested in having expertized prior to an exhibition. The issue commemorates the May 15, 1948 arrival of Egyptian troups in Gaza. The article goes on to tell of the extensive stamp collection of former King Farouk. "After the Republic was formed in 1953, the Palace Philatelic Collections were auctioned off the following year in a series of sales conducted by H. R. Harmer Ltd. of London and the United Stamp Company of New York." The auction catalog examined in the article mentions that the existance of imperf sheets (in 1953) was perviously unknown. Usually one sheet was archived in the collection, and marked with special control marks. Based on the references from the auctions and confirmation of the control marks, the APS Egypt specialist was able to verify that the pair in question had indeed come from the Palace Collection. |

Geo-Mexico Reports on Mexico's First Map Stamp
Fellow collector Tony Burton writes us with some news of a post about Mexico's First Map Stamp on his blog Geo-Mexico. Tony is a geographer, writer and lecturer specializing in Mexico. "It was not until 1915, in the middle of the Mexican Revolution, that a map of the Republic appeared for the first time as the central design on a Mexican postage stamp. In addition to the states, the map shows the main railway lines and also the main shipping routes." Tony also points out an interesting observaton that "the island of Cuba has been brought much closer to the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula than it really is."
[ Be sure to check out Tony's another post about The Earlist Landscapes on Mexican postage stamps. Thanks for the info Tony, and hope to see an article about Map stamps of Mexico in a future issue of the NCP. -- web admin. ]
